After being unable to compete last year due to the short notice of the event, Elisa Gonzales, the Willow Bend Elementary Physical Education Teacher, decided to take two sprint relay teams to run in the Lubbock Area Elementary Championship Track Meet.
The track meet held especially for elementary students in the area, offered three events, the 4x400 relay, 4x100 relay, and a Mile Race.
Around 13 schools competed in the track meet, with Willow Bend being the only school to represent Frenship. Gonzales took eight students, or two teams, to run in the 4x100 sprint relay.
Gonzales hosted practices once a week to prepare the students for the track meet. At one point they visited Terra Vista Middle School so the students could practice on a real track and better prepare for the real event.
Gonzales stated that the students were excited for the track meet, and she was interested in getting more students involved in the future. “We love the idea of having a meet and getting the kids involved in a little competition,” said Gonzales. “I’d like to see them add some field events.”
Although the students didn’t make the finals this year, they worked so hard and put in their best effort.
“We can’t wait to get ready for next year,” said Gonzales. “I am so proud of our students and the work they did!”
