Willow Bend Elementary Kicks-Off Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month is an annual celebration of the history and culture of the U.S. Latinx and Hispanic communities, the event spans from September 15 to October 15.

Willow Bend Elementary invited the Lubbock ISD Ballet Folklorico club to their campus and put on a performance. All grade levels gathered in the cafeteria to watch the dancers, clapping and cheering throughout the performance.

Ballet Folklorio is a style of traditional cultural dances that emphasize local folk culture with ballet characteristics. The Lubbock ISD Ballet Folklorico is a group of dancers that help educate families and audiences about Mexican History and culture, strengthen national identity of Mexican Americans, and create a significant and permanent connection to their cultural heritage.

The women are dressed in different dresses to represent the different regions that they come from. The music and dances vary depending upon the region as well. They tell history of different regions from Mexico through a dance. As you see the dances from different regions you will see the outfits changing, the music changing, and even the performance of the dancers changing.

“It is an exciting way to kick off a month-long celebration of a very rich heritage and history that so many of our students and staff can relate to,” said Jennifer Pierce, principal at Willow Bend. “We want to expose our students to as many different cultures as possible!”
