Willow Bend Student Council Sponsor Elisa Gonzales said that the scholarship started with the idea that teachers and staff want to see Willow Bend students grow their futures.
“We know our Willow Bend kiddos will make it in college or trade school, and we want to continue to see them be successful in the future, so then why don’t we help provide some of that help to get there,” Gonzales said. “I pitched the idea in our first staff meeting in 2019 and was super excited when everyone embraced the idea and immediately wanted to get it started.”
Gonzales said a scholarship committee was created last school year with several teachers and some Student Council students.
“As a committee we created an application and talked about how we wanted the scholarship to look,” Gonzales said. “Last year we were able to award Sarah Mousavi with a $1,000 scholarship to go towards her Fall Semester at Texas Tech University.”
Gonzales explained that the funds for the scholarship last year came from teacher and student donations, but this year they wanted to get the entire Willow Bend family involved. This week students can pay one dollar to participate in each themed dress up day.
“We created a dress up week for our students and families so they can be able to contribute too,” Gonzales said. “We are also in the works for a benefit night at Bahama Bucks. With the help of our families, we will be able to make our scholarship amounts larger. This is also a way to let parents know that we are investing in our students beyond their elementary days.”
Gonzales said Willow Bend is excited to raise even more this year to help Willow Bend alumni with their future.
“Willow Bend teachers and staff believe in our past, present, and future students,” Gonzales said. “This is our way of showing the Willow Bend seniors at Frenship High School that the Willow Bend Family is still rooting for them!”
If you want to donate to the Willow Bend Teacher and Student Council Scholarship, you can make donations directly to Willow Bend Student Council in the front office at Willow Bend Elementary. All money raised will go to the current school year’s scholarship recipient.
